Are you looking for a way to help prevent comment spam on your WordPress blog? Well, there are two plugins that I use and very highly recommend, Akismet and Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin, both of which are free.
When I first moved from Blogger to WordPress, I couldn’t believe how many spam comments I was suddenly getting. It was like hundreds, and that is not an exaggeration!
I asked around and heard great things about Akismet, so I decided to give it a try. It worked wonders! I went from getting hundreds of spam comments a week to only getting about 15-20 per week. To date, Akismet has caught 2,514 spam comments!
Unfortunately, after about a month or so, I started getting more and more comment spam. Akismet was still working and catching most of them, but for some reason there were even more showing up in my WP dashboard. There was no way I had time to sit around and moderate them all. I decided to look for another plugin to use in addition to Akismet.
After a little bit of trial and error, and talking to other bloggers to see if anything was working for them, I decided to use the Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin. I tried a lot of the other plugins that were suggested but Growmap just flat-out worked the best.
Growmap also prevents comment spam by adding a hidden field to the form with a label that has a name value with the word “email” in it. A spam bot will usually try to fill in all fields on a form, if that field has been filled in, it is obviously a spambot.
If you suffer from insane amounts of comment spam like I used to, you should try using Akismet and Growmap together. I have been using them both for quite some time now, and still only get between 2-5 spam comments each week!
