My First Sewing Project – a Zipper Pouch!

March 29, 2014 By: Tonya9 Comments

sewing accessoriesEver since I first used my sewing machine to put a few patches on G’s Girl Scout vest, I’ve wanted to see if I could actually make something with it.  So, I decided to jump right in and try my hand at making a zipper pouch.

Once I started, I didn’t stop until it was finished.  I didn’t keep track of exactly how long it took, but it was more than a couple hours.  Not because it was overly difficult to do, but because all these tutorials “for beginners” apparently assume you already have some knowledge of sewing machine lingo, which I did not.  This meant that a good bit of my time was spent on my laptop looking up things like “what is a zipper foot” (one came with my machine and I just didn’t know what the heck it was, lol) as well watching videos on YouTube for “how to attach a zipper foot”.

It’s my own fault though, I guess.  I probably should have taken the time to learn some basics before just jumping right into an actual project.  But I was excited, darn it!  Now that I’ve learned these things, I feel confident that the next time I make one it will go much faster.

So, here is how my first sewing project turned out.  What do you think?

If I wasn’t hooked before, I sure am now!  I’ve already decided what my next project will be.  I’m going to try to make a cute drawstring bag.  Stay tuned…

The same thing happened to us, we wanted to make some clutch/ wallet/ zippered pouch type things for my friends and I to bring inside NFL stadiums (no purses are allowed, you can only bring in a clutch about the size of your hand. We bought fabric, zippers and ribbon for the handle part and spent most of the day looking up tutorials and googling terms in the tutorial!

I don’t have a sewing kit but I created a few costumes for my kids, all hand sew.

That’s a very nice pouch and if ever I have a sewing machine, I think I’ll spend more time on it than doing the household chores haha
